It’s been a few years since Lenovo first introduced its giant table-top PC as a kind of hybrid solution for both family fun and productivity, and safe to say, we haven’t seen many (or any) of these in the wild since then. But that doesn’t mean Lenovo, the world’s largest PC maker, has stopped experimenting with it. Today the Chinese PC-maker introduced a new Yoga Home 900 Portable All-in-One Desktop.
“Portable” may seem a bit tongue-in-cheek, because the 27-inch, 16-plus-pound machine isn’t necessarily something you’re going to take with you on your next business trip (and if you do, please send us the video). It’s actually positioned as a home computer, meant to offer desktop-grade performance but with some ability to move it from location to location, while still getting three hours of battery life unplugged.
‘PORTABLE’ MAY SEEM A BIT TONGUE-IN-CHEEK WHEN IT COMES TO THIS GIANT COMPUTER
The new Yoga Home 900 — which has a much more memorable name than its predecessor, the Lenovo IdeaCentre Horizon — runs on Windows 10, and has a 27-inch, full HD touchscreen display, with a kickstand in the back that either props it up or lies flat to turn the computer into a giant tablet. It can be configured with a fifth-generation Intel Core i7 processor, an optional Nvidia GeForce 9420 graphics processor and up to a one-terabyte SSHD. It’s built with three USB ports, one HDMI port, and two 2.5-watt speakers. Mice, keyboards, and gaming accessories connect via Bluetooth 4.0.
Speaking of gaming, Lenovo is still pushing its homegrown entertainment interface, called Aura, just like on the Horizon tabletop tablets before it. When you lie the Yoga Home 900 flat the Aura UI pops up, with a selection of photo, gaming and education apps. Lenovo says the Aura app store now offers more than 500 apps, and this new computer has enhanced photo editing and facial recognition technologies, as well.
It’s certainly a niche product, but consumers who prefer to use large displays at home might possibly find some use in a hybrid like this. The Yoga Home 900 starts at $1549.99, and is available at the end of this month on Lenovo’s own website and through Best Buy, which will sell it at a slightly reduced price.
