Google Nexus 6P software update will bring an end to shaky video

The absence of optical image stabilisation (OIS) was a glaring omission from the Nexus 6P’s camera, but Google has promised to compensate with a software update.

Many flagship smartphones use OIS to help prevent blurry photos and shaky videos, but the web giant has opted for a software solution to these problems.

The Huawei-made Nexus 6P is already equipped with electronic image stabilisation to boost video capture, and Google is amping things up further by improving the handset’s processing algorithm. The update was announced during a Reddit Q&A session with Google engineering vice president Dave Burke, who also addressed the absence of wireless charging.

Burke claims that the feature was dropped because its inclusion would have made the phone bulkier and USB Type-C is a much faster solution.

The Nexus 6P is now available to order from Google’s online store, with prices starting at £449 and shipments due to start later this month.
