2017 Land Rover Range Rover Sport Supercharged / SVR

Written by

Separated from the top-trim Range Rover Sport by only a supercharged V-8 engine and a few hundred dollars, the Range Rover Sport Supercharged and SVR variants hold their own in a narrow segment of sport-tuned, high-performance SUVs. When driven hard, some stray body motions keep the Sport Supercharged from equaling the efforts of the excellent BMW X5 M, Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT, or Porsche Cayenne Turbo. Still, the Land Rover name needs no introduction, and the Sport Supercharged is a status symbol recognizable in its iconic silhouette alone. While it may not be the best option in its class if you’re seeking maximum performance, few who could afford a Range Rover Sport Supercharged or the even more powerful SVR model would regret buying one.

What’s New for 2017?

There are only minor changes for 2017. The most noticeable is a new 10.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which incorporates Land Rover’s InControl Touch Pro system. Safety features including lane-departure warning and automated emergency braking have been made standard across the lineup. Blind-spot monitoring, an intelligent speed limiter that can read road signs and restrict the vehicle from going over the speed limit, and technologies such as lane-keeping assist are now available.

Trims and Options We’d Choose

There’s no truly affordable way to get your hands on Land Rover’s supercharged V-8 engine, but judicious shoppers can at least avoid a purchase in the six figures. For starters, you’ll have to forgo the tuned-up SVR trim, which delivers 550 horsepower (versus the standard 510) and other sporty upgrades at a more than $30,000 premium. The $84,725 Supercharged Dynamic model, one step up from the base Supercharged trim, would be our pick. That model includes:

• Gloss-black exterior trim accents
• Red Brembo brake calipers
• Perforated-leather seats
• Sliding panoramic sunroof

A split-folding third-row bench seat, best for occasional use, adds $2000 to the price.
