The wait is over: the iOS 10 release date is upon us. Well, sort of.

Although the full iOS 10 update might not drop until September, presumably alongside the eagerly-awaited iPhone 7, Apple has confirmed that the iOS 10 public beta is now available to download.

Giving you early access to many of the upcoming iOS 10 features, from a redesigned control panel and enhanced Siri features to a massively updated Messages experience and improved photo search, the beta release is open to anyone with a compatible iPhone or iPad.

It won’t cost you either – this early iOS 10 access is completely free. All you need to know is how to download the thing.

Fortunately, downloading the iOS 10 public beta is a beautifully simple process. To start, you’ll need to register for the Apple Beta Software Program right here. To do this, you’ll need your Apple ID and password.

Once you’ve signed up and agreed to Apple’s lengthy T&Cs, you’ll need to enrol your iOS compatible device, but…

STOP! Don’t press a thing. Before you enrol your device, make sure that you’ve backed it up. This is beta software and that means that bugs can still exist, so play it safe and make sure all your pictures, messages and apps are backed up before carrying on to the next step.

Right, carry on. Once you’re backed up, you’ll need to point your device’s browser tobeta.apple.com/profile and download and configure your profile. Your device should now prompt you to install the beta file and walk you through a simple step-by-step configuration guide.

All that’s left now is to go Settings > General > Software and click “Download and Install”. That’s it, you’re ready to go. It’s time to enjoy some new iOS 10 features and brag to your mates how your phone is more up to date than theirs.
