Made Your Capsule Wardrobe Work

Now that it finally feels like fall on the east coast, I’ve had the opportunity to break out my fall capsule wardrobe. To bring you up to speed, after having much success with my maternity capsule wardrobe, I decided to create one for the fall. It entailed cleaning out my closets and putting a hold on shopping. You can read about how I started my capsule wardrobe below.

One factor that made sticking to this dressing philosophy easier for me was choosing a color palette for my wardrobe. I decided to use mainly neutrals (black, tan, denim and white), as well as blush and navy. Obviously, I wear other colors but keeping it limited allows me to mix and match more easily.

I’ve moved everything I’m not planning to wear (those pieces not part of my ‘capsule’) to the back of my closet to make my outfit choices easier when I’m getting dressed. Out of sight, out of mind. I’ve also done this with my shoes and boots! Having a smaller wardrobe means more laundry, which is actually helpful for me because I’m notorious for letting it pile up way too long.

The ‘no shopping’ part of this philosophy was easier than I expected. It made me think through each purchase more and I created a shopping list for the season. I really only needed a few pieces. Every year I like to pick up a couple new sweaters and a few trendy pieces like the plaid scarf and denim skirt pictured above. I completely avoided shopping online because I usually make impulse purchases when visiting blogs and shopping sites.

I’ve also found it helpful to pre-plan my outfits, much like the peace of mind I get with pre-planning my meals for the week. Checking my schedule and figuring out what I’ll be wearing takes the question out of what to wear and saves time. All in all, I’ve had a great experience with my capsule wardrobe and can’t wait to update it a bit for the colder winter months ahead.

What I included in my fall capsule wardrobe:

  • 3 pairs of jeans (2 skinny, 1 boyfriend)
  • 1 pair of skinny black jeans
  • 3 pairs of black leggings (Hey, I work from home!)
  • 4 T-shirts (2 solid, 2 striped)
  • 3 crew neck sweaters
  • 2 open cardigan sweaters
  • 3 blouses (2 printed, 1 solid)
  • 3 button-up shirts (1 white, 2 plaid)
  • 1 camel blazer
  • 1 denim jacket
  • 2 dresses
  • 1 denim pencil skirt
  • 1 camel mini skirt
