Do multivitamins prevent premature birth?

Written by

If you’re thinking about having a baby in the near future, leading scientists in America say you may want to add a multivitamin to your weekly shopping list. Here’s why.

We all know that a healthy and well balanced diet is key for mothers-to-be, but new research has found that taking a multivitamin around the time of conception could significantly reduce the risk of birth complications.

The study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, studied 36,000 Danish women and revealed that those who took a multivitamin in the four weeks before and eight weeks after their last period had a 16 per cent lower chance of delivering a premature baby.

However, it also noted that the same benefits didn’t apply to women who were overweight, although it was unclear why.
