Should I choose a Suzuki Vitara over a Toyota or Nissan?

Sammy wants a Suzuki Vitara, dad though isn’t so sure.

I’m wondering what you think of the new Suzuki Vitara? I like the styling and the pricing but a few people, including my dad, are steering me towards a Toyota or Nissan SUV.

Hi Sammy, there is no doubting that there is a good argument to be made for the alternatives, especially that Nissan QASHQAI. As we found when we road tested and reviewed the diesel version (review can be found here), it’s a solid, well-built and very frugal little Crossover/SUV.

The Toyota RAV4 and the Suzuki Vitara have had a long standing battle and both really were the pioneers of the small SUV market in Australia (and elsewhere). The RAV4 in 2016 though (reviewed here) has become a fair bit more expensive than the Suzuki.

It starts at $27,990 and that only gets you a manual version with front-wheel drive and a petrol engine. You’re looking at a further $2,000 for the auto version.

While on paper the Suzuki Vitara seems to make more sense. Prices start at just $21,990 and for a similar amount of money as the base-model Toyota you can get a top-spec 4×4 Vitara with an auto transmission and added features such as:

  • 17” alloy wheels
  • Satellite-navigation
  • Factory tinted windows
  • Rain-sensing wipers
  • Push-button ignition
  • Glass roof with a powered blind

Toyota charges an additional $550 for metallic paint, this is anything but the plain flat white. Suzuki charge between $475 and $996, though the standard paint is an attractive white pearl.

Both vehicles, as well as the Nissan QASHQAI, come with five-star ANCAP safety ratings. All three get a three year/100,000km warranty.

Go and drive all three Sammy and see which one suits you best, while we don’t think you will go wrong with any of the three cars you have mentioned, perhaps the Vitara makes the most sense from an economical perspective?

We’d love to know which way you go.
