Dry shampoo is a lifesaver. Whether you work out regularly and don’t want to wash after every sweat session or you’re trying to keep your hair healthy by washing it less, that oil-absorbing spray comes in handy. Unfortunately, there’s been a dry shampoo recall, and it’s time to check your stock.
Unilever has recalled varieties of its Dove, Tresemme, Nexxus, Sauve, and TIGI dry shampoos due to potentially elevated levels of benzene, a human carcinogen.
Benzene exposure can occur via inhalation, oral contact, or through the skin, and its carcinogenic nature means elevated exposure could result in cancers like leukemia and blood disorders. While benzene exposure shouldn’t be taken lightly, benzene is actually everywhere in our environment. Humans are exposed daily simply by walking around both indoors and outdoors. While benzene is dangerous, dosage and exposure levels do matter.
The Unilever recall is being done out of an abundance of caution, and as of press time, the brand has not reported any adverse effects. In testing the products, the brand discovered that the levels found would not be “expected o cause adverse health consequences” according to the FDA press release.
