VW really needs something to turn its fortunes around after the debacle that was its diesel fuel efficiency scam, which it has yet to dig itself out of. VW is trying to move forward with some new vehicles and one of the EVs that CEO Hebert Diess is talking up right now is a new electric car that the says is about the size of a Golf, but packs the cargo space of a Passat.

The new EV will debut in prototype form in Paris soon and the big news here is the driving range that VW is claiming. VW says that the real world driving range for the car will be in the area of 248 to 372-miles. That would be 400 to 600 km. It’s unclear if the exec was talking about an EPA driving range or the New European Driving cycle.

Diess noted that the prototype that will be unveiled in Paris is close to the car that will go into production. The production version of the EV is set to land in 2018-2019. It remains to be seen if the car will have the range promised but if VW can pull off an affordable EV with around 300 miles of range per charge, it may well become the leader in the EV market.
