2JZ Camaro SS killin’ it on the dyno and on the streets! Before you feel sad or angry about someone putting a Toyota Supra motor in a ’67 Camaro, stop for a minute. You’ll be pleased to find out it pumps out 823 hp at the rear wheels with a completely stock short-block. The 183ci Toyota 2JZ-GTE straight-six originally installed in Mark IV Supra is legendary for its tremendous power potential and reliability with relatively simple modifications. Although it put out a meager 320 hp from the factory, more than tripling that figure is all too common with simple valvetrain and turbo tweaks

Car owner Ted Nguyen explains that a setup like this doesn’t make full boost until 4,000 rpm, but the valvetrain upgrades allow it to rev to 9,000 rpm and make up for it on the top end. Before he started this project, Ted had to first track down a suitable first generation Camaro. Since he was more interested in tackling the unorthodox powertrain swap than a full restoration project, he purchased a show-quality ’67 RS/SS coupe that was already finished.

During the day, Ted runs EVS Motors, an outfit that peddles high-end muscle cars and exotics. His shop’s in-house fabrication capabilities certainly came in handy during the building of this 2JZ Camaro. Code-named 2JZ-GTE, the motor’s short-block and oil system are completely stock. Winding out the motor to 9,000 rpm makes the most of the 37 psi of boost cranked out by the Precision 74mm turbo. The Getrag six-speed manual is completely stock. The German-made box, also used in the Porsche 911 Turbo, is known to handle more than 1,000 hp without a hitch.
